Harlem Reacts To “Harlem Shake” Videos

“They’re dry humping air.”

“Zombies going crazy.”

“Find a new hobby.”

“People on West 4th Street would do that.” (The biggest insult of all.)

i think this video is a bit extreme and doesn’t really leave room for the fact that the meme is just people being silly and enjoying themselves, and that the song playing is fairly irrelevant—in my mind, any EDM song with a drop could have been used in place of ‘Harlem Shake’ and the videos would have the same effect. that being said, if the actual Harlem Shake dance is as culturally/historically important as the people in this video make it out to be, then it is a bit insensitive to name a trap song and silly videos after something taken so seriously when they have nothing to do with the original dance. if videos featuring the actual Harlem Shake were to become viral, the meme would be a lot less problematic in my mind, as they would be honoring the original meaning of the term while sharing cultural knowledge (as in, informing non-Harlem residents of the existence of a unique dance from Harlem called the Harlem Shake) and spreading appreciation for the existent value of that cultural tradition. however, by naming something ‘Harlem Shake’ and paying no mind or respect to the original connotation of the term, Baauer and the creators of these videos are appropriating an existent and culturally significant term for their own ridiculous and irrelevant purposes (15 minutes of internet fame). what will come to mind for most people when they hear the term ‘Harlem Shake’ in the next few months? probably not the culturally significant dance which has been around for decades, but, more likely, a short-lived and soon-irritating meme that held the internet’s attention with its silly and participatory nature for a week or two in early 2013. that reassignment of meaning, i believe, is the meme’s largest offense and that is the reason i have reblogged this video.
